The best AI rewriter is the one that fits the job: a quick tone change on an email, careful paraphrasing of a source for an essay, or a full document. This comparison puts five free AI rewriter tools side by side, QuillBot, Grammarly, Scribbr, Ahrefs and our own just AI it, using only what each tool says on its own public pages.

A note on fairness: we make just AI it. That is why we didn't score or rank output quality, and why our tool is listed last with its gaps stated. Every fact about another tool links to the page it came from, and we checked those pages on October 27, 2026. If a page didn't state something, the table says so instead of guessing.

How we compared these AI rewriter tools

  • We read each tool's public product page, and QuillBot's help center for its free limit, on October 27, 2026.
  • We compared four things a free user hits first: how much text one run takes, which modes or tones are free, whether you need an account, and which languages the page lists.
  • We left out prices, because plans change often, and star ratings, because we did not run a review study.
  • We did not run the other tools on test text or judge their output. The before and after examples on this page come from our own tool, run on October 27, 2026.

What to check in any free AI rewriter

  • Does it keep your facts? Check every number, date and name in the result.
  • What is the free limit per run, and is it counted in words or characters? 100 words is roughly a short paragraph; 2,000 characters is a few paragraphs.
  • Do you need an account, and what happens to the text you paste? Read the privacy policy of any tool before you paste private details.
  • Does it support your language and the tone you need?
  • Does it claim to hide AI use? Be wary of that. A rewriter should help you say what you mean, not disguise where text came from.

Best AI rewriter FAQ

What is the best AI rewriter?

There isn't one best AI rewriter for everyone. QuillBot has a Synonym Slider for how much the wording changes. Grammarly fits people who already write in Grammarly, Scribbr suits students paraphrasing sources, Ahrefs rewrites one paragraph with a set tone, and just AI it is built for quick tone changes without an account. Pick by the job, then try it on your own text.

What is the best free AI rewriter?

It depends on the limit that matters to you. Per their own pages on October 27, 2026, QuillBot's free paraphraser takes up to 100 words at a time and Scribbr's takes up to 125 words per input. The Ahrefs input counter shows 2,048. just AI it takes up to 2,000 characters per rewrite, 25 rewrites a day. Grammarly's page does not state a free input limit.

Did you test the output quality of every tool?

No. This page compares facts each tool states on its own public pages, such as limits, modes, signup and languages, and links to them. Output quality depends on your text, so we did not rank it. The example outputs on this page come from our own tool only.

Why isn't just AI it ranked first?

We make just AI it, so ranking ourselves first would not be a fair comparison. It is listed last with its limits stated plainly, including what it doesn't have, such as a thesaurus, document upload or citation tools.

Is using an AI rewriter cheating?

Not by itself, but rules differ. Many schools and employers allow editing help and some ban AI tools for certain work. Rewrite your own writing, cite any source you paraphrase, and check the policy that applies to you.

What is the difference between an AI rewriter and a paraphrasing tool?

They overlap. A paraphrasing tool restates an idea in new words. A tone rewriter changes how the text sounds and is told to keep the facts. Try one on the just AI it home page.

How often is this comparison updated?

The facts were checked on October 27, 2026. Tools change their limits and plans often, so check each tool's own page, linked in the sources, before you rely on a number.
